Our History

From humble wooden crate beginnings to Europe wide (and elsewhere) supplier of various packaging materials, we have come a long way.

Our Story

In 1981 Produce Packaging began operations from a shed in the heart of the Kent countryside. Making wooden crates for Kent fruit growers was the only string to our bow at the time and whilst it was successful it was limited in its scope and new ventures were sought. Firstly, we made the switch to manufacturing corrugated produce trays and cases for the same clients but as the industry became more competitive and demand grew exponentially, paper manufacturers started to consume this market. Produce Packaging began importing box and crate liners from the continent to compliment the box business, but it soon became clear that distribution of materials that our clients found it hard to obtain was where our growing future lay. Today we provide over 1500 product lines to our clients and continue to add to this portfolio. In addition we source and supply hundreds of bespoke solutions every year including boxes, films, pre-pack trays and bags amongst many other items.

Whilst we have retained our relative location in Kent as our Head Office, it now occupies 3 buildings and is some 20 times larger. In recent times we have opened 3 more depots across the nation in strategically important regions, to meet demand from our ever-growing client base. We have moved our depot from the H L Hutchinson Ltd site in Wisbech to our first purpose-built site in Spalding, we have opened a depot in Ledbury to service the Vale of Evesham and the west and we have opened a depot in Forfar, Scotland, to further enhance our Nationwide coverage.  In 2022 our Spalding depot was doubled in size in order to keep pace with our growth and as an investment for the future.

Investment and innovation have driven our progress and we now supply products to over 500 produce packers, across multiple sectors in the UK as well as exporting as far afield as New Zealand and South America. Our products are sourced from the UK, Europe and Canada and all meet the stringent requirements for food safety of course. Our depots are all BRCGS certified, and we are proud to continually maintain our AA standard. Recent investment has added a new box conversion plant at our site in Marden, Kent and box conversion facilities in Scotland which appear to be bringing us full circle as we can provide an unrivalled service. As we work toward our 50th anniversary, investment and innovation will remain the key drivers for our continued growth and development.
